Be sure that you’re getting the perfect exhaust tips for your vehicle. The choices are many, but you can find the right exhaust tips fast by asking yourself these 3 questions:

Should I choose a weld-on or clamp-on tip?

One design isn’t necessarily better than the other, but they are quite different. A few key points must be considered before choosing your exhaust tip.

Clamp-on Tips

Anyone with a wrench can install a clamp-on style exhaust tip—they require no welding and install quickly. Most models even feature an integrated clamp, making it even easier. Just slide the tip onto your tailpipe, tighten the nut, and voila—instant style the quick and easy way. Clamp-on tips are the perfect choice for the do-it-yourselfer.

Clamp-on exhaust tips have two major drawbacks. Vibrations may cause the clamp to come loose, so you’ll want to tighten your tips up now and then. And, the gleam may catch the eyes of a petty thief, resulting in the loss of your tip.

Are easy to install with minimal tools—usually, a wrench is all that’s needed

Offer instant satisfaction and style—just open the package and clamp it on

Make changing your style a snap—unlike permanent welds, it’s easy to unbolt one tip and install another

Require periodic tightening of the clamp to prevent the tip from slipping off

Are not as secure from the sticky fingers of degenerate thieves

Weld-on Tips

Weld-on tips, as their name implies, must be welded into place. This is always the preferred method for professional installers. It’s easy to do—if you know how to weld and have access to a welder. If not, most muffler shops can do the welding for you. Once installed, your weld-on exhaust tip is super secure—it can’t fall off, and the speed-wrenching thieves will be foiled again.

Are the preferred style of industry professionals

Are totally secure—they won’t come loose and are virtually theft-proof

Must be welded into place

It May require professional installation if you don’t have a welder or the experience

How do I know what size to choose?

Inlet Size:

Inlet Size

The inlet measurement on the exhaust tip must match the diameter of your tailpipe.

Outlet Size:

Outlet Size

This is the size of the exhaust side of your tip. Some tips flare out, some are straight. If your vehicle’s body has a cut-out for an exhaust tip, make sure the new one will clear this area to avoid an unsightly fit, or even worse, burning or scorching your vehicle’s body.

Length:

This measurement determines how far out your tip is going to extend. Just as with outlet size, you must consider the locations of any factory cut-outs. You also want to make sure that the hot exhaust gasses will be exiting safely.

How do I decide between stainless steel and chromed steel?

Both materials are great for building high-quality exhaust tips. If you’re looking for an economical style, go with chromed steel. If you seek a long-lasting luster and a material that stands up to years of abuse, stainless steel is your answer.
